Watkins Glen's SVRA vintage event has occupied the weekend after Labor Day for a good long while now, putting a period on the hot summer weather and waving the green flag on what every classic car afficionado knows is the best season for classic motoring: autumn. Old cars (and old car drivers) love the cooler air.
The celebration starts on Friday, with the Grand Prix Festival; a collection of tours, most sponsored by one of the local wineries, for road-going cars that include a cruise thru the hills around the Finger Lakes, a nice lunch somewhere, and in the afternoon, a few paced laps around the original 6.6 mile circuit that includes a dash down Main Street.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend this year so I hit Youtube to get an update. This is some footage from the gathering of cars at yesterday's Glenora Winery-sponsored tour...annoying music warning.
And I can testify from past experience that nothing makes you appreciate modern emissions controls better than spending hours in your top-down roadster, bombing around wonderfully undulating roads, stuck behind some late 60's muscle running just a bit rich and leaving a period correct noxious perfume in it's wake. ;-P
Later in the afternoon, many of the weekend's racing participants come down from the track to the village to also enjoy some paced laps around the original 6.6 mile circuit.
Highlights of this footage include a buzzing gen-1 RX-7; some topless Skaybait @ 7:13; a bunch a Mini's - this year's featured marque; a glorious pack of vintage Trans-Am heavy metal thunder; a Silver Martini-liveried 917; and a racing Toyata 2000GT.
After the laps, Main street is alive into the evening with music, food, drink and cars. The weekend's racing is great. I know Brian Redman's event @ Road America has been growing, but a few years ago this was (and still might be) the largest vintage event in the country with over 500 partipants - that doesn't include the tours, BTW.
